Purpose of Department:
The Office of Advancement exists to connect alumni and friends to advance the mission of William Peace University. We are responsible for alumni engagement, creating and sustaining community partnerships, friend-raising and fundraising for annual (operating), capital, and endowment campaigns. Our vision is to cultivate a philanthropic culture among our alumni and friends, fostering pathways of support for WPU to provide vibrant learning experiences for our students.
Summary of Position:
Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Director of Development is responsible for identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gift prospects and donors to support the mission of William Peace University. This position plays a crucial role in establishing and implementing strategies to secure philanthropic support from alumni, parents, friends, corporations, and foundations. The Director of Development will work closely with the Vice President of Advancement to drive fundraising initiatives and enhance relationships with donors.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Responsible for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and/or stewarding a portfolio of prospects, developing the goals, strategies, and tasks associated with closing gifts for William Peace University. This portfolio will include a mix of individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Develop a plan and implement strategies to secure funding from corporate and foundation partners.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with corporate and foundation partners.
  • Create and submit high-quality grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and reports to corporate and foundation partners.
  • In coordination with other Advancement partners, develop written proposals, gift agreements and other appropriate correspondence and forms necessary to close and document new gifts and commitments.
  • Work as a collaborative and creative partner with leaders across campus such as faculty, senior leadership, athletics, other university stakeholders, etc. to identify fundraising initiatives and priorities, develop proposals that will align with those initiatives, and create dynamic donor experiences.
  • Actively participate in campus life, including attendance at key events such as athletic competitions, student performances, gift announcements, and groundbreaking and dedications. Host donors and prospects at events that advance stewardship and cultivation for future philanthropic support.
  • Meet annual visit goals through personal travel/interaction, virtual meetings, and substantive phone calls. Meet annual solicitation and attainment goals as developed in consultation with the Vice President for University Advancement and advancement colleagues and provide regular progress reports.
  • Travel as necessary locally, regionally, and nationally to manage a portfolio of prospects effectively and to oversee and/or assist with managing events.
  • Stay current on industry trends and best practices in fundraising, donor engagement, and philanthropy to inform strategies and enhance the effectiveness of development efforts.
  • Research potential corporate and foundation funding opportunities and recommend actions related to those identified as appropriate for partnership with WPU.
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements, including expenditures, reporting and stewardship requirements.
  • Represent the University with external audiences, including corporate and foundation partners, community leaders, and donors.
  • Employ excellent judgment and tact in working with university administrators, faculty, staff, foundation officers, and all external constituencies.
  • Maintain accurate records of all individual, corporate, and foundation interactions and prepare regular reports on fundraising activities.
  • Work effectively with a diverse group of employees, students, visitors, guests, donors, and potential/secured external partners.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with three years of progressive experience in development or fundraising.
  • Transferable experience may include grant writing, program management/development, sales, or marketing and will be considered.
  • Successful candidates must possess strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to effectively articulate the University’s mission and programs to external audiences; excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines; and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Candidates must also have knowledge of fundraising best practices; the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across the institution; and proficiency with Microsoft Office and donor management software.
  • The chosen candidate must have the ability to travel substantially, as well as attend events in the evenings and weekends.
