Job Description
Advising is an equal partnership between the student and the Advisor who is responsible for providing advisement/planning to students with current and accurate information about academic programs and campus policies to empower students to own their educational choices and decisions. Advisors collaborate with students, their families (when needed), and other departments to develop appropriate academic and transitional support to students, as well as holistic, proactive opportunities applicable to all aspects of the student’s life- academic, personal, social, and career. The Advisor will serve as the point person in a ‘warm hand-off’ from Admissions to assist the student and their families, navigate pre-enrollment tasks to be completed prior to arriving on campus through tasks required to the point of graduation. The selected candidate will also assist in the instruction of the First-Year Experience course and the implementation of other programs and services designed to promote academic, personal, and social/emotional success, engagement, and retention of students. This is a full-time, twelve (12) month appointment.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serve as the point person to assist students and their families in completing necessary steps to ensure a smooth transition when they arrive on campus and throughout their matriculation.
  • Monitors students’ progress toward certificate or degree requirements. Verifies completion of degree requirements for degree conferral.
  • Responsible for the registration, drop/add, withdrawal, and changes of curriculum functions, including data entry into the registration system for each student advised.
  • Provides information regarding the promotion of special programs and opportunities such as learning communities, honors programs, etc.
  • Assist with first-year student activities that promote a sense of “belongingness” and “connection” to peers, Saint Augustine’s University, and the community.
  • Establish and maintains interdepartmental relationships with all student services, instructional programs, and college partners in order to effectively respond to students’ needs.
  • Teach the First-Year Experience (FYE) I and II courses.
  • Design and lead Success Seminars on such topics as time management, test taking, study skills, dealing with homesickness, and leadership building.
  • Provide student support through developmental coaching that comprehensively supports the whole student in all aspects of their life – academic, personal, social, and career.
  • Provide transitional advising support to all entering first-year students.
  • Advise on scheduling, majors and careers, academic progress, and general College policies and procedures.
  • Provide academic overview through the group, peer, and individualized contact.
  • Advise students regarding academic standards and assist with creating schedules.
  • Maintain confidential records, collect data, and prepare reports related to the functions of advising, planning, evaluation, and assessment.
  • Other duties as identified by the supervisor

CHARACTERISTICS OF POSITION AND/OR EXPECTATIONS:
  • Demonstrated history of ability to analyze a complex situation accurately then deploy an effective solution (problem solving).
  • Ability to build and maintain a collaborative working relationship with diverse, multicultural stakeholders (internal and external) and act as an advocate for the student and the University.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Comfortable speaking to a wide variety of audiences, including parents, students, coaches, faculty, and administrators.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills are required for this fast-paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media platforms required.
  • Must be able to adhere to student confidentiality and privacy guidelines.

Required Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Master’s degree required. College Student Development, Counseling, Education, or closely related field preferred.
  • Experience providing student development services/advising to students in a higher education setting.
