Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Julius L. Chambers Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute (BBRI) is a 40,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art research facility that is dedicated to expanding the University’s research capacity, particularly in the biomedical and biotechnology areas. The BBRI is a broad based multi-disciplinary research and training institute. The mission of the BBRI is to conduct multidisciplinary and inter-institutional research focused on health issues that disproportionately affect minority and underserved groups while providing students with research experiences that will enhance their access to careers in the biomedical sciences.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position is to inform people about healthy choices in behaviors and help them achieve the goal of making those behaviors into habits as it relates to the PBERN grant in all facets.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Analytical skills.
Health educators collect and analyze data and other information in order to evaluate programs and to determine the needs of the people they serve.


Instructional skills.
Health educators and community health workers should be comfortable with public speaking so that they can lead programs, teach classes, and facilitate discussion with clients and families.


Interpersonal skills.
Health educators and community health workers interact with many people from a variety of backgrounds. These workers must be good listeners and be culturally sensitive to respond to the needs of the people they serve.


Problem-solving skills.
Health educators and community health workers must think creatively about how to improve the health of their audience through health education programs. In addition, health educators and community health workers may need to solve problems that arise in planning programs, such as changes to their budget or resistance from the community they are serving.


Writing skills.
Health educators and community health workers develop written materials to convey health-related information. Health educators also write proposals to develop programs and apply for funding.

Develop a community/patient engagement advisory board

Part of the Community Engagement Core for the PBERN

Work closely with RCMI CEC

Collect community-focused surveys for MOU development with clinical practices and student health

The CHE will help improve health outcomes for marginalized communities to serve as a Community Health Educator. The Community Health Educator will coordinate the implementation of community health prevention and education activities, including the organization and collaboration with established workgroups and committees, technical assistance to strategic community partners, and implementation of community assessments.
Function Information Technology
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Possible use of iPad or similar technology in the field for community use. Smartboard presentations, use of outlook suite applications.

Other Examples could include but are not limited to: Telehealth, remote patient monitoring devices, health trackers, mobile devices ( e.g., smart phones, tablets), mobile health apps, and technologies for managing health information including electronic health records.
Function Public Service
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
  • Will develop programs to teach people about conditions affecting well-being. Community health workers promote wellness by helping people adopt healthy behaviors.
  • Specialize in providing education services for people in given communities.
  • Examine public health challenges and current policies,
  • Advocate for improved policies
  • Develop programs to help educate the public about important health issues.
  • Train other community health workers on how to best address these issues.
