Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Student Health Center (SHC) supports the University and Division by providing an array of healthcare services. Student centered in our approach, SHC adapts to the changing needs of the campus community through innovation and technology. The SHC provides comprehensive ambulatory medical care to the student community in a professional, compassionate, and confidential manner.
The Student Health Center includes a full service pharmacy and laboratory. Our health educators utilize education and health promotion programs to instill the value of health and wellness in our students. The SHC supports other university departments through effective communication and collaboration. The SHC strives to maintain accessibility, accountability and fiscal responsibility. The goals of the Student Health Center are to provide high quality, student-centered, healthcare services in an inclusive, respectful, and efficient manner, empowering our students to achieve academic success and lifelong wellness.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Laboratory Technologist will perform tests and assist with the application of this information to each clinical situation. In the educational role, the employee will develop and implement staff laboratory relevant programs. Quality control another integral facet of service, involves: the participation in a structured program to demonstrate competency; troubleshooting abilities including but not limited to an aptitude for statistical interpretations and initiation of corrective actions when indicated. The employee also assist in appropriately maintain the laboratory area in a safety oriented manner. The employee will assist in the development of laboratory policies and procedures; overall laboratory planning; budget preparation and responsible fiscal management, as well as other duties required by the supervisor or laboratory director. The employee works independently using a high degree of technical and decision-making skills to ensure an accurate interpretation of each test performed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Perform analyses as ascribed by Federal standards (CLIA) or the product manufacturer; record test results accurately; report critical values to the attending health care provider; conduct and monitor all phases of quality control testing for all laboratory tests- implement correction actions; participate in proficiency testing programs successfully as designated by the proficiency program; maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment per manufacturer’s specifications – keep maintenance logs; clean and disinfect the laboratory area according to accepted standards and ensure proper waste disposal per OSHA guidelines; revise and update the operational procedure manual when indicated; conduct inventory of supplies and reagents as needed for laboratory services; compile monthly and annual laboratory statistics as required; develop a safety manual for the lab with revisions as needed, under the oversight of the lab supervisor and clinic director; assist in the evaluation of equipment for future purchase to provide more effective patient care; maintain a good working relationship with all purveyors of goods and services; and, perform other relative duties required to meet organization goals, as assigned. Considerable knowledge of laboratory procedures and polices applicable to the area(s) of work. Possess a high skill set of laboratory techniques. Must be knowledgeable of the basic pathophysiological processes and how the medical laboratory science is applied. Considerable knowledge of quality control standards and procedures. Skill in the use of common laboratory techniques (i.e.: phlebotomy, pipetting, etc.). Ability to make accurate observations and written reports. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to supervise the work of others. Ability to instruct other health professionals in laboratory procedures and instrumentation. Ability to research and develop procedures, methods, training materials and to implement necessary changes.
Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or a Biological Science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in medical technology; chemistry; biological science; or graduation from an associate degree program of medical technology and one year of medical laboratory experience; or completion of a certified laboratory assistant program in medical technology or a comparable course and two years of medical laboratory experience; or graduation from a high school, and four years of applicable medical laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
