Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
This position is within the Julius L. Chambers Biomedical Biotechnical Research Institute (JLC-BBRI). The mission of the JLC-BBRI is to conduct multidisciplinary and inter-institutional research focused on health issues that disproportionately affect minority and underserved groups while providing students with research experiences that will enhance their access to careers in the biomedical sciences.
Primary Purpose of Position
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Assess the health needs of the population in the 16 counties serviced by the HOPE program; Identify current and emerging health issues by working closely with community members and organizations and use this to inform practice; Provide pertinent health education and health behavior information to vulnerable communities with the intent of assisting community members in improving health; Other duties as assigned, etc.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
To succeed in their role, community health educators need to cultivate several relevant skills, including:


Analytical Skills

Community health educators gather data and analyze health indicators and risks to prioritize the most needed health education programs. They also evaluate the success of the programs they have implemented and assess what strategies can lead to needed improvements.


Team-Building Skills

To successfully lead programs, community health educators must collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds. This requires an inability to inspire cooperation and participation. It also involves identifying people’s strengths and delegating responsibilities accordingly.


Communication Skills

Writing proposals for health education programs and developing educational materials require excellent communication skills. Community health educators must also make health-related information clear and accessible to community members.


Teaching Skills

As educators, specialists in community health must use effective instructional strategies when facilitating workshops or teaching classes. They also need to understand pedagogical concepts and use them as a basis for education programs they develop.


Interpersonal Skills

Running successful community health education programs requires good listening skills, empathy, and responsiveness to community members. Community health educators regularly confront problems in launching and maintaining programs. To solve these problems, they need to interact with others and build trusting relationships.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Public Service
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Collects health and community data to be used in planning public health and public health educational programs. Assists in the organization of community groups to study community problems. Assists in planning and participating in workshops, conferences, and discussion groups to promote public health and public health education. Prepares educational exhibits and visual aids. Prepares news releases and radio spot announcements on assigned topics. Prepares and presents talks on health topics, and services provided by the health department to civil organizations and other community groups. Performs related work as required. Employees assist in planning and implementing a program of community health education designed to assist individuals and groups in recognizing and solving health problems through the proper selection and use of educational methods. Work involves participating in workshops and conferences to define and promote community health needs.
Function Research
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
General knowledge of the functions of community health agencies. General knowledge of methods and techniques used in preparing and disseminating educational information to the public. General knowledge of the techniques involved in preparing and displaying posters, exhibits and other educational visual aids. Ability to present ideas effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel, community organizations, and the general public.
