Primary Function of Organizational Unit | The NCCU School of Law Library provides information services and resources that promote the performance of high-quality legal research activities by our faculty, students, staff and community. The law library reference department has primary responsibility for providing legal research instruction and reference services to students, faculty, alumni and public patrons. |

Primary Purpose of Position | The Reference Librarian will work with other members of the reference staff to provide extensive reference and research assistance to faculty, students, staff, the local bar, and the public. |
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities | Candidates must also have excellent communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and a familiarity with and understanding of legal research materials in all formats. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, able to meet deadlines and work well in a collaborative environment to achieve common goals. S/he will be able to develop productive working relationships and work effectively as a team member as well as independently. Some teaching/training experience is required. |
Minimum Education/Experience | Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA-approved law school OR a Master of Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution. Generally, this individual has 1-3 years of experience in the field. |

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. | The Student Services & Instructional Librarian is a member of the NCCU School of Law reference team who works with other reference librarians to provide extensive reference and research assistance to faculty, students, staff, the local bar, and public patrons. They will lead the planning, development, teaching, and assessment of the First-Year Legal Research course, Introduction to Legal Research. They will also have the opportunity to teach Advanced Legal Research courses. They will provide liaison services and training to assigned groups, as needed. They will use advanced technologies to prepare research bibliographies and create innovative research aids designed to market library services and resources to faculty and students. They will participate in departmental planning and the selection of information resources, and perform other duties as assigned or required. |

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. | The Student Services & Instructional Librarian will lead the identification of the research needs of the law school student body and plan services to meet students’ needs. They will lead the evaluation of software and web resources to develop assessment activities focused on student learning outcomes and research competencies. They will lead the planning of events, trainings, and workshops that enhance students’ research skills. They will provide LMS support for students and faculty in using Westlaw TWEN and Lexis Classroom. They will be responsible for the supervision and management of the reference department student workers. They will also assess students’ research needs and satisfaction with library services annually through surveys and focus groups. They will be responsible for the preparation of statistical and other reports which demonstrate the unit’s deliverables, progress and accomplishments as assigned by Law Library Administration. |
